The Magic Bell of Evocation

Post in English / Post en Anglais

With the 'Tuba Veneris' (which I would speak in my next post), the evocation Bell is a very interesting Artifact for all practitioners of the Ars Niger among others ..

The Secret of Secrets, Grimoire of Tosgraec (Ms. l'Arsenal 2350).

A 18th century manuscript of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris No. FR 2350 (manuscript belonging to Cardinal de Rohan).

This manuscript is in Latin and French. Very few books speak of this bell. The Bell is sometimes depicted in grimoires, often poorly transcribed. The bell was originally composed of seven metals, or 'magical electrum'.

This bell was used in spirits/demons evocation and necromancy.

Girardius (eighteenth century) mentions it in his book: "Girardius parvi lucii libellus de mirabilibus naturae arcanis, anno domini 1730".

This manuscript shows the aspect of the bell:

On the bell is located at the bottom, the inneffable name TETRAGRAMMATON: above, the hieroglyphics of the seven planets, then the word Adonai, and finally, on the ring, jesus. around the circle, the names of the seven spirits of the planets by which the operation is done:

ARATRON, Spirit of Saturn

BETHOR, Spirit of Jupiter
PHALEG - Spirit of Mars
OCH - Spirit of the Sun
HAGITH -  Spirit of Venus
OPHIEL - Spirit of Mercury
PHUEL - Spirit of the Moon.

The bell must be composed of an alloy of lead, tin, iron, gold, copper, quicksilver (mercury) and silver, these metals must be melted together, the day is to time of birth of the person who wants to be characterized and sympathized with the mysterious bell.

One must write above the cove the name of Adonai and the other side of the cove, write Jesus, and on the thickness or circle below, write the name of Tetragrammaton, and between the two circles to print the seven planets, and between the handle and the circle from above, the date of the birth of the person who must use.

Then you have to wrap it in a piece of green silk and keep it in this state until the person undertaking the great mystery have the freedom and ease required to be able to put that bell in a cemetery in the middle of a pit, and leave this state within 7 days. while the bell has survived in the garment of the earth of the cemetery, the emanation and sympathy joined the impression of necessity it needs, that feeling never leaves her and takes her to that effect to the perpetual virtue and quality required when the buzzer at this.

There are various engravings of bell used for evocations

From La Clavicule de Salomon, Le Secret Des Secrets (1825):

La Clavicule de Salomon, Le Secret Des Secrets (1825)

From Sloane 3847. The Clavicle of Solomon, revealed by Ptolomy the Grecian:

[Chap. 7] Of a Bell;

The master shall have a bell, and towle 4. times toward the 4. partes of the world, with 4 pater nosters, sayinge, every part,

"vos omnes sitis et cognoscitis per huic arti ad ***dum nobis; vos ve i??? oprtet estoti prti que vos volo continue invocare et ideo facio vobis signum quod audire debeati que parti sumis, ad cohartandum vos".

In that bell ought to be written these names; a, v, o, B. y. as Joth, heth, he, vau, and these carecters with pen and Inke as followeth to this.  (See below for correct Oraison).

Sloane 3847

By the vertue of these names, the voyce of the bell shall enter into there hearts, to cause them to feare and obay, and that donne, let them prosecute there worke, that they may fullfill it, that they may renew the circle and fumigations and soe proceede in there worke.

The Bell should be consecrated with this prayer:

Litt: Vos omnes qui scitis et cognoscitis quod huic arti ad serviendum vos venire oportet, estote parati, quia vos volo invocare, ideo facio vobis signum quod audire debeatis, quia parati sumus ad coercendum vos.

Similar bell in an Anonymous German grimoire (1505).

From JH Peterson:

After this let the magus commence his incantations, having placed the knife upright in the ground at his feet. Having sounded the trumpet towards the East15 as before taught let him invoke the spirits, and if need he conjure them, as is said in the first book, and having attained his desired effect, let him license them to depart.

15. Mathers omits "towards the East." Sl. 3847 reads, "let the bell be toward the East." Aub24 omits this phrase. -JHP

From an unknow French manuscript:

Givadius Bell:

A magic bell is used for call up the dead.

Composed of an alloy of lead, tin, iron, gold, copper, mercury and silver, it carries these various names engraved: at the top 'Adonai' on his ring 'Jesus' and down 'Tetragrammaton', all around, are the names of the seven planetary spirits:

ARATRON, Spirit of Saturn

BETHOR, Spirit of Jupiter
PHALEG - Spirit of Mars
OCH - Spirit of the Sun
HAGITH -  Spirit of Venus
OPHIEL - Spirit of Mercury
PHUEL - Spirit of the Moon.

Givadius Bell
Figure text:

Composition of the negromantian bell of Givadius.

Take a lot of lead for Saturn, two batches of tin to Jupiter, a lot of iron Mars, two lots of gold for the Sun, two batches of copper for Venus, two sets of fixed quicksilver for Mercury two lots of silver for the Moon. You will take four more batches of metals you...

Process:

Before the evocation one must wrap the bell in a piece of green taffeta and keep it in this state until the person undertaking the great mystery has the freedom and ease required to bring said bell in a cemetery in the middle of a pit (1), leave it in this state within seven days. While the bell remained in the garment to the ground cemetery, the emanation and sympathy joined the printing of necessary character as it needs never leaves it, and leads it to the perpetual quality and required virtue when you ring the bell for this purpose (2).

(1): Fresh grave that has been dug.
